3)ANNUAL GAME:
Hong Kong Mass Transit Railways team ‘Synergy’ won the Championship of MERIT 2014
After the early competition where 90 teams from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, India, the USA and the Netherlands competed against a computer simulation, the top six met at Loughborough University to play out a two-day final, competing against each other as well as the computer .
The six teams and their positions coming into the final were.
MTR’s ‘Professional Passionate Engineers’
Atkins Hong Kong’s ‘Prevail’
MTR’s ‘Synergy’
Arup’s ‘AgRUP of MEN’
Mott MacDonald’s ‘Buckingham Palace’
Arup’s ‘It’s all Ova now’
‘Synergy’ coming into the Final in third position progressed through the final eight rounds showing an improvement in performance in each round, the only team to do so. In a tightly fought final between the two MTR teams ‘Professional Passionate Engineers’ were in first place in five of the final rounds, ‘Synergy’ gained the top spot twice but fell back to lie second in the penultimate round and then they produced a final surge to overtake their colleagues to end in the top spot.
Last year an MTR team was overtaken in the last round by an ARUP team, this year an MTR team was again overtaken in the last round but this time by another MTR team!
So congratulations go to Gordon Kwok, Dickie Chan, Henry Lam, Ellen Wong, Davy Chan and Dave Cheung who have become Hong Kong’s first MERIT Champions and the ICE Silver Salver was presented to them by David Kyte of the Management Board
The Sponsors Award was won by Mott MacDonald and Andy Thomas attended to be presented by the award by Mick Guy of CITB. This was the third time that Mott Mac has won the Sponsors Award.
Next year’s MERIT will be the 25th and plans are being made to make it special, these will be announced over the summer.
